During the quarter, the Company was impacted by eroding macro-economic conditions and decreased industrial activity; higher global energy prices, especially in Europe; and slowing U.S. residential construction in response to rapidly rising interest rates and ongoing inflation; while benefitting from strengthening market conditions for caustic soda. Third quarter 2022 earnings for the Company was also impacted by a $70 million charge recorded in cost of sales, or $0.42 per share, after-tax, related to pending litigation (the “Legal Charge”).
